Salmon

Alaskan Coho Salmon   Salmon 1. (Zo”l.) Any one of several species of fishes of the genus Salmo and allied genera. The common salmon (Salmo salar) of Northern Europe and Eastern North America, and the California salmon, or quinnat, are the most important species. They are extensively preserved for food.

Salmon from Latin 'salmo, -onis' linked to 'salire', i.e., to jump and hence, the leaping fish

Many articles state that the salmons were protect (or mentioned) in the Magna Carta. But the truth is that it is mentioned indirectly. It actually says:

All kydells (fish-weirs) for the future shall be removed altogether from Thames and Medway, and throughout all England, except upon the sea shore.

Based on records from salmon canneries, coho in Oregon north of Cape Blanco (near Port Orford) numbered about 1.25 million adults annually 100 years ago. During recent years, the annual production of wild coastal coho in Oregon has been dramatically less, around 50,000 to 80,000 fish - a 90 percent decline.
